Well, Brighton is the Deep South (if only of the UK) and its red-hot BBQ epicentre is John Hargate’s Bar B-Q Shack. The globetrotting Lancastrian gained his slow grill skills in Texas after getting his culinary grounding under John Torode and Gary Rhodes. With a string of British barbecue awards under his belt, it’s no surprise his burgers, too, are as darn good as it gets. His signature smoked pulled pork is piled nigh on the delectable Memphis burger (£10.95) on its nest of awesome slaw. It just pips the brisket-led Dallas Burger,a quid dearer. Hargate himself bigs up another overloaded Texas-style 9 ouncer, the O.D.B, which mates pulled pork, brisket, chorizo, bacon double cheese and onion rings for £15.95. Venue The World’s End is a basic boozer well out of the centre. The trek’s worth it.
