a century on and still pouring, this has a strong claim to be the oldest tea
shop in town. Indeed the three-storey premises feel much older, like some
Victorian haven just off the hectic seafront. The tempting array of home-made
cakes is set out on simple wooden tables, the serving china (also mounted on
the walls) is blue willow. Students, hipsters, families and ancient patrons all
received a meltingly warm welcome here. The food offering is equally eclectic –
sardines, Welsh rarebit and the like – but those cakes are the magnet. We
suggest you try the monster meringues!
