If one dish epitomises head chef Anthony Burns’ finesse with hearty ingredients it is his love of morcilla (black pudding) which featured in the ‘Jolly Charcuterie’’ platter namechecked by the Good Food Guide when they included the pub for the first time in the 2015 edition. Accomplished as his £15-£25 mains are, his style is summed up best by the global boldness in his starter flavours – Seared Scallops, Dong Po Pork, Mango & Chilli Salad (£8.75), Native Lobster Spring Rolls,St Pippin Puree, White Miso, Pickled Radish (£11.50), heading Spainwards again with Pata Negra Croquettas, Jerez Aioli, Baby Leaves (£7.25). Wines start at an accommodating £16 a bottle and there’s a range of good cask beer such as Harvey’s and Hop Back. Sunday brunch is a jolly affair in this sibling of the much-loved Jolly Sportsman in East Chiltington (see Country Dining Pubs).
