There are tables with cushioned pews, log fires in winter and a cornucopia of agricultural paraphernalia in this convivial village pub run by a veteran landlord. Expect Burning Sky Plateau and Harvey’s Sussex Best on handpump, eight wines by the glass and a farm cider, while outside ducks and chickens roam the garden. The food has no aspirations beyond good pub grub, but dishes such rabbit casserole with bacon and cream, half a crispy Gressingham duck, plaice in lemon and parsley butter and classic puddings deliver. It’s a great base for walking the Downs – bookings in the inn’s self-catering apartments are for two nights’ minimum.
