Union Hand-roasted of East London supply Ground’s house espresso blend. It’s medium roasted, designed to work well with or without milk. Caramel, apricot and almond notes feature in this floral mix of coffees from Brazil and Guatemala with a smidgeon of Rwanda blended in. Union source their coffees from Direct Contract Trade, ensuring farmers are paid prices well above Fairtrade. The seriousness with which Ground take the whole coffeemaking process shows in their website briefings: “We are fortunate to have a nice Mahlkönig K30 Twin Espresso Grinder in our Hove shop, which enables us to serve up a guest espresso each day to complement the Bright Note. To this end we have a dedicated group head on our 3-Group Synesso Cyncra that runs the gamut of the UK’s best espresso blends and single origins.” Wow. Hence guest appearances from cult roasteries such as Extract, Origin, Square Mile and Ozone. Ground is also fanatical about tea, too. If all this sounds a mite intense, fear not. Both Hove and Kemptown branches are happy places just to lounge with a cappuccino and a home-made pastry.
